DAN JAGT

Music has been a lifelong journey for Dan, starting with piano at age 10 and evolving into a deep passion for rhythm, harmony, and creative expression. Although reading music initially proved challenging, Dan's natural talent led him to master drums and guitar by age 16 through his high school music program, which included a 10-day performance tour in Barbados. This experience inspired him to pursue formal training, via the Jazz Performance program at Mohawk College in Hamilton, ON, where he studied under renowned instructor Kevin Dempsey (a protégé of Marvin “Smitty” Smith, Joe Morello and Gene Jackson).

With over 20 years of teaching experience, including at the prestigious Merriam School of Music in Mississauga, ON, Dan offers a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his students. He has toured North America with indie band A Northern Chorus, performed extensively across Toronto, Hamilton, and Calgary, and collaborated with artists in a variety of genres. Beyond instrumental instruction, Dan provides lessons in recording and audio editing using GarageBand and Logic Studio. His leadership experience includes 10 years leading Education Sales for Apple Canada and three years training and leading the team at the Apple Store, Market Mall, where he cultivated a passion for technology and creative tools.

Dan’s teaching philosophy is student-led, emphasizing personalized goals and building core skills in rhythm and harmony. A love for music runs deep in Dan’s family. His children have achieved accolades in jazz and choir, and one is self-taught on the piano—testament to the creative spirit that inspires his teaching approach.
